If after reading the title of this post you thought I am going to talk about growing herbs in my kitchen, you are wrong. Totally wrong.
After 4 days in Savannah, I came home and found that an onion that has been sitting on my kitchen counter for at least a week has started to grow green spikes! That's not exactly the first time this has happened, but still, I thought that was pretty cool.
The green spikes are not the same as green onions, but they have similar, but stronger, flavor/taste. I'm sure I'll figure a way to incorporate them into one of my meals.
By the way, thank your lucky stars I did not take photographs of the mold that started to grow on my bread. Totally gross, but would make for a fun school projects.
So, what fun or not so fun things have grown in your kitchens lately?
Just the puppies. :)
ReplyDeleteThere is always stuff growing in our kitchen. I never thaught of using the green spikes, but that's a good idea. :) I have a funny/gross video on my blog "rotten potatoes" about a totally gross potato that was on our kitchen table.
ReplyDeletewhoa cool!! i had a potato that sprouted once...
ReplyDeletei didn't know we can actually eat those spikes!
ReplyDeleteWhich reminds me....I think I'll clean my refrigerator today. The shelves and bins are..well...crusty.
ReplyDeleteI always find potatoes with tubers growing out of them, but I cannot get herbs I actually want to grow.
ReplyDeleteFYI: You can eat onions that are sprouted, if you like the taste. As for potato sprouts, you should NEVER eat them. Sprouts on these vegetables mean they have been stored too long or in the wrong temperature.
ReplyDeleteA couple of years ago, I cut into a tomato that looked perfect on the outside, but on the inside the seeds had actually sprouted. It was really bizarre looking, wish I had thought to take a pic.
ReplyDeleteYou must have an extremely green thumb for this to happen!
ReplyDeleteAnd here I was looking for a site about growing mangoes. Can you grow one in your kitchen too? ;-)
